A Page for Prudence

Miss Prudence

Prudence is a beautiful little girl dog my human's adopted to keep me company.   They thought I was lonesome all day while they were working and that I needed some company.  They also thought that having another canine around would help to keep me stimulated and encourage me to exercise.   Well the joke was on them -- that dog needed me more than I needed her.

Prudence wasn't as lucky as me when she was a puppy, she lived most of her life in a place called a "puppy mill" and instead of playing with other dogs and running around free, she lived in a cage all by herself.  Maybe that's why she's not very tall and only weighs 35 pounds.   Her hips are sunk in and she has trouble walking.  In fact, when she does walk she doesn't bend her legs -- she keeps them very stiff and straight.  You can always tell when she's coming your way because you can hear her nails on the wood floors.  Tap tap tap is the sound she makes when she walks around the house.

Even though Prudence is smaller than me she bosses me around a lot.  When we go for car rides she  stretches out in the back seat and makes me sit up straight, close to the door. She takes up almost all of the back seat!  Being the gentle dog that I am, I let her have all of the room she wants.  She always sticks her nose into whatever I am doing and she butts in front of me when we go through a doorway or when we get ready for our dinner.  She  tries real hard to be first when our humans take us for a walk.  When I look back at her I can see that pointy little nose pushing forward trying to run in front of me with those stiff little legs.  Sometimes I slow down to let her catch up because she has to take three steps to equal one of mine!  She can't run for very long  either.  My humans  have to coax her all the way home because she runs out of steam after just a short walk.  It's fun having her along with me though - we make a handsome looking couple.  I can tell that because when people see us together, they smile.

Sometimes Prudence gets in trouble.  Here are some pictures of her digging in the food bag.  I guess she's really hungry tonight.

Last fall we went to a picnic with lots of spotted dogs.  I think they called it a Daloween Party.  Here's a picture of Prudence on a big red fire truck.  She looks real pretty up there.  We had fun that day.  We got to go on a long car ride and we even got to sniff lots of other dogs.  I liked going to the picnic.  Prudence liked it too.  I hope we can go again.

June 2011

I am sad today.  Prudence got real sick and went over the rainbow bridge.  I miss her.   I know I taught her lots of stuff while she was living with us.  I taught her to be nice to other dogs and to bark for her dinner.  She was really fun to watch as she danced around barking while the food was being put in our bowls.  And when we were done eating she would let me lick her bowl - just in case there was some food left in the bottom.  She would let me clean up the floor too after she dropped crumbs from the treats that we got.    I know she liked me.   She wouldn't let me do that if she didn't.

I miss Prudence and I know my mom and dad humans miss her too.  I feel better when when I think about her up in doggy heaven running and playing with all of the other dogs --  just like I taught her to do.

We love you Prudence and we're sorry that we didn't have more time to be with you.
